Slat is mainly vulnerable around the edges, where capillary action draws water into its laminations, allowing freeze-thaw damage. Impact damage and nail tiredness from wind agitation also hastens its demise. Gaps may be filled with acrylic caulk and broken slates repaired with Polaroof SP PVC coating used as an adhesive. The edges of the slates are sealed with Polaprime 2 PVC/acrylic primer, and two coats of Polaroof SP PVC coating are brushed over and around the slates to provide a waterproof and wind-resistant seal.
