Challenge:
St. Agnes Church in Philadelphia is a beautiful example of well-crafted copper roofing following an intricate design concept, from the ornate finial to the segmental billet of the dome down to the cornice and the lozenge windows and spandrels. Decades of acid rain, corrosion, and erosion had taken its toll on the metal so that it needed repair, restoration and protection.

Three products from Andek Corporation were used to accomplish this mission. Polaprime 21 is a moisture-cure urethane primer that encapsulates and protects metals, including copper, from corrosion. Polafab is a soft, elastic polyester fabric that reinforces efficiently and can be formed into intricate corners and shapes and maintain a low profile. Polaroof AC is an acrylic coating that incorporates endothermic pigments that reduce heat stress and protective pigments to prevent corrosion. After careful preparation and cleaning, the roof was primed with Polaprime 21, then detailed repairs were carried out with Polafab and Polaroof AC using the Andek Fab Tool. Once all repairs were complete, Polaroof AC in a custom tinted patina color was coated over the entire roof. This layer of protection maintains the original appearance and color of the roof and will extend its lifespan for many years into the future.
